Rabot

In the 13th century, Rabot was the gateway to world trade, making Ghent one of the most powerful trading centers in Europe. Around 1800, with the construction of dozens of factories and densely populated working-class areas, Rabot was the heart of the city's industrial expansion. From 1970 on Rabot stood for modern social housing projects, most notably the 3 Rabot towers. 40 years later they turn out to be completely dilapidated, residents are evicted, the towers are demolished and replaced by new housing units. This series is a critical commentary on the unsustainable urban planning both in the sixties and today with the new projects. ******* Rabot is in de 13de eeuw de toegangspoort tot de wereldhandel, waardoor Gent uitgroeide tot één van de machtigste handelscentra van Europa. Rond 1800 was Rabot, met de bouw van 10-tallen fabrieken en dichtbevolkte arbeiderswijken, het hart van de industriële expansie van de stad. Vanaf 1970 stond Rabot voor moderne sociale woonprojecten met meest opvallend de 3 rabottorens. 40 jaar later blijken die totaal uitgewoond, worden bewoners uitgezet, worden de torens afgebroken en vervangen door nieuwe wooneenheden. Deze reeks is een kritische commentaar op de onduurzame stedenbouwkundige keuzes die zowel in 1970 als met de nieuwe projecten gemaakt werden.

Het kwartetje is het resultaat van het dagelijks opvolgen van de knabbelmachine in actie. Toen ik zag wat voor uitzonderlijke kanjer hij aan 't knippen was wist ik wat te doen.
De vernietiging van de thuis van honderden gezinnen na amper 40 jaar. Elk stukje 'debris' dat bij het neervallen te tellen valt is getuige van die 40 jaar.
